Enough by John C. Bogle

"Enough." by John C. Bogle, founder of Vanguard Mutual Funds is a terrific read. He starts out with a technical analysis of the fees involved with the mutual fund and financial services industry so for those who like details, a fantastic learning experience. Then, he switches to the moral importance of doing things the right way and all the problems that have happened over the last 40 years to change the industry and what needs to be done to correct things. Recommended to me by HBW Head of Operations, Joe Bonanno, this is a very important book for those of us in this industry.

The Answer by John Assaraf and Murray Smith

A great message about visualization and how the mind works when focused on a goal. It was helpful for me in refocusing my goals and vision for my life and the things we all aspire toward.

The Wright Way by Mark Eppler

Perhaps the best book I have ever read on business problem solving and the way to approach accomplishing unusual challenges. It was so great that I have read it through twice and went over several chapters a number of times. The Wright Brothers figured out how to fly against all conventional wisdom and their approach will help all of us make our businesses fly. A definite must read.

The Go-Giver by Bob Burg and John David Mann

"The Go-Giver" is a fun, quick read but very important. Recommended by NDA, Ron Dortch, it speaks to giving value in order to receive success. The more you give, the more you are able to receive. The values are very much in line with the ethic we strive for at HBW and I think the story in the book will move you and help you see your business and success in an entirely new light.

Love Your Life and It Will Love You Back by Sourena Vasseghi

Submitted by Bonnie Hellenbrand

While driving along Barney and I heard this man (through his interpreter) on talk radio, and I was moved to order the book he wrote about the life lessons that he has learned. Born with Cerebral Palsy, Sourena Vesseghi has adopted a passion for life that is truly inspirational, and in his book he is sharing tools that you can use, too, to fulfill your unlimited potential and love your life so much that it all comes back to you. He was awrded the Best Business Book of 2008 from the National Indie Excellence Awaqrds. This short book, which is a very quick read, contains strategies for success in 10 lessons:

  1. Dream Your Ideal Life
  2. Feel the Fear
  3. Make Problem-Solving a Passion
  4. Don't Limit Your Thinking
  5. Use Envy to Ignite Your Passion
  6. Let Need Fuel Your Success
  7. Keep the Change
  8. Take Advantage of Luck
  9. Trust Your Instincts
  10. Be Open to New Experiences

The stories and simple ideas in this book keep coming back to me as I go through my daily life and could be beneficial to your life as well.

The Best Game Ever: Giants vs. Colts, 1958, and the Birth of the Modern NFL by Mark Bowden

This book is a fun read, particularly for football fans and is, in large part, about HBW Co-Founder Raymond Berry. As you begin to understand Raymond through the eyes of the author, in context of the huge role he played in the most important game in the history of the NFL, you begin to understand and perceive Raymond’s influence on the entire HBW Company as well. Have a great time with this one.

God Is A Salesman by Mark Stevens

“God is a Salesman” by Mark Stevens is one of the best books I have ever read on changing your mentality from a salesman to someone who builds relationships with clients. Although the title seems off-putting, it is actually extremely respectful and reverential to whichever deity you may follow. This is a very quick read and well worth the time.

Innovate Like Edison by Michael J. Gelb and Sarah Miller Caldicott

“Innovate Like Edison” is an amazing read. The people who wrote it explored Thomas A. Edison’s amazing abilities to create a product that consumers wanted, create the infrastructure to mass produce it and then deliver it to the end consumer. The book speaks to his amazingly fertile mind and how we can learn to think in ways that will help us create innovations for our own lives and businesses.

The Power of Nice by Linda Kaplan Thaler and Robin Koval

“The Power of Nice” is a great reminder that treating people the way you want to be treated brings amazing, wonderful results. The authors give example after example of cases where having an attitude of kindness, appreciation and caring for the people you work with and for leads to amazing benefits. A quick read and certainly worth the time, I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Both these books are pure motivation and inspiration, things we all need to help us keep up the good fight. The Science of Success: How Market-Based Management Built the World's Largest Private Company

By Charles G. Koch

The Science of Success is an extremely cerebral, thought provoking book, written by the CEO of the largest, privately held company in America, Charles Koch. For someone who wants to build a world class business it is quite a read. In fact, many of the values espoused in the book will be implemented and reinforced at HBW as we work toward our goal of building a world class company. A short read, 166 pages, it will be well worth the time.

From Desperation to Dedication: An Ex-Con's Lessons on Turning Failure into Success

By Troy Evans

Troy Evans’ story of failure to redemption is one of the most powerful and compelling experiences I have ever read or heard about. Troy has become a friend since first speaking at an HBW FasTrack event for the entire company where he led the audience through his experiences and ultimate redemption. Troy helps us all see that we can do amazing things when we set our minds towards a goal and his messages of balance, focus, commitment and that we need to stop being prisoners within our minds will be important for you and everyone important to you.

The Traveler’s Gift: Seven Decisions that Determine Personal Success

By Andy Andrews

The Traveler's Gift is one of the most touching, thought provoking reads you will experience in the business/self improvement genre. I was so impressed I sought Andy out as our Keynote speaker at the August 2007 FasTrack. Later, I heard from several of our associates who had seen Andy speak previously and raved about him. This is a book you may never forget.

The E-Myth Revisited: Why Most Small Businesses Don't Work and What to Do About It

By Michael E. Gerber

Use code HBWLVNV for a 15% discount if you purchase this book through the E-Myth store!

This book is a great guide for learning how to take your sales and/or recruiting practice and optimize it into a real, viable business. In a very simple, understandable way, you begin to see yourself more clearly, how you run your business and how your business can grow and allow you to develop a model that works even when you don’t. They teach the basic concept that all entrepreneurs should learn, working “ON” your business while you’re working “in” your business to create an enterprise that can succeed beyond all your expectations. At HBW, we thought so highly of the book and its principles that we actually hired the EMyth organization to do an All-Day training seminar and be our key-note speaker at our February 2007 FasTrack Training event.

March 2007 Bonus Book:

The Five Lessons a Millionaire Taught Me About Life and Wealth

By Richard Paul Evans

As I was reading this book, I was impressed with the concise way that the author describes the important steps to financial independence. The first step starts with a decision, next personal responsibility, paying yourself first, finding alternative income streams which he calls “winning in the margins” and finally, giving back. This is a great book to give to a client, particularly one struggling with debt or other financial challenges. The entire book is not much more than 100 pages and it is one you will be glad you read.

The Business School: For People Who Like Helping People

By Robert Kiyosaki

This book is a fantastic guide on understanding what type of business you want to own and how you can begin to think about moving from an employee or self-employed mind set into a true business owner mind set. For anybody who has the dream and/or desire to build a big business this is a must read. I devoured it and after reading it felt that everyone serious about building a business at HBW would be greatly served to read this, as well. To quote Robert Kiyosaki in the book, "My rich dad said ‘the richest people in the world look for and build networks, everyone else looks for work.'"
