Pre-Qualifying Your Clients Prior to Writing the Application

One of the most important aspects of writing business for your clients is accurately assessing the most likely rate class they will be approved at. This is called Field Underwriting. The process starts with you, the agent, determining the overall health and insurability of your client, the most likely rate class they will qualify for, the approximate premium they will have to pay, and finally, which insurance carrier will be most in tune with your client's level of risk.

Asking the right questions to prequalify your client can be difficult at first. The Field Underwriting Form simplifies the process for you by putting all the most important questions in one place, as well as giving you a record of your client's answers. View the Paramedical Exams page to schedule a paramedical exam and view the paramedical exam preparation guide.

IMPORTANT: Remember to let your clients know that the final decision on their approval and the rate they are approved at is based on the underwriting process including a paramedical exam and likely review of both their medical records and their driving record.

Selecting the Insurance Carrier

After Pre-Qualifying your client, you should have a better understanding of which channel to use through the HBW system. All your ordinary "standard" or better business should channel through one of HBW's "Highlight" carriers - (AIG) American General, Banner Life, or (F&G) Fidelity & Guarantee. All your Impaired Risk business should be channeled through our Life Brokerage Division. What is Impaired Risk?
