Impaired Risk Cases

What is Impaired Risk, and how can I serve clients with an Impairment?

An Impaired Risk case is when your client has a health issue (Heart attack, cancer, build, etc.) or hazardous occupation or hobbies (Race car driver, pilot, SCUBA diver, etc.) and will not qualify for standard and above class ratings. Any life case which does not fit into the normal underwriting guidelines at American General and Reliastar due to health related issues is considered Impaired Risk. We place some of the most difficult cases and insure Impaired Risk clients who truly need coverage. If you're tired of letting your clients know they are declined or can't get your client an affordable rate, contact HBW and ask about our brokerage division, we are here to serve you.

Getting Started

So your client has an impairment and you can't get them a Standard or above class rating, what do you do? HBW has the resources to shop your cases to many of the major, top-rated brokerage carriers in the Industry with a simple questionnaire with no signatures.

Here's how the Impaired Risk process works:

  1. View the Ask the Doctor menu on this page and fill out the form appropriate for your client. If the form you need is not available, contact jessica@hbwinc.com to email the proper form.
  2. The more information you give, the more accurate the offer will be, so make sure all possible fields are filled out. Incomplete forms will be sent back for additional info and delay the process. Remember the offer will only be as good as the information provided.
  3. Submit the questionnaire to HBW electronically by clicking the Submit button at the end of the form. If you are submitting a hardcopy form, you may fax it to 800-636-1302, attn: Jessica Gaar.
  4. Please allow 2 business days to get a tentative offer back. HBW does not underwrite the cases, so please be patient. We want your business to be placed as much as you do.
  5. Upon receipt of the tentative offer, HBW will forward it to the agent. The tentative offer is only as good as the information you have provided. All cases are subject to the formal underwriting. The tentative offer will provide the class ratings by company. Choose the company and product that is right for you and your client and run the Illustration with Term Quote.
